The panther, the symbolic animal of Cartier, made its first appearance in the Maison’s collections in 1914. Louis Cartier was the first to tame the mythic animal, and his colleague Jeanne Toussaint turned it into a legend. The panther can be fierce, playful, or lovable, displaying all the facets of its liberated personality from one collection to the next.

Cartier’s Panthère is an icon. First launched in 1914, the panther has served the house well as a symbol of unbridled luxury. Cartier is celebrating the big cat’s centennial this year with a new collection, Panthère de Cartier, comprised of 56 pieces and launched in early September.

The relationship between Cartier and the panther motif began early on, when Louis Cartier – grandson of founder Francois Cartier – commissioned La Femme à la Panthère in 1914. The art deco oil painting of a bejeweled woman with a panther was created by the famed George Barbier and was eventually used in Cartier’s famed advertising. A panther-inspired watch was released later that year featuring diamonds interspersed with onyx, evoking the animal’s characteristic fur markings.

The love affair between Cartier and the panther design continued to blossom. Jeanne Toussaint, a designer friend of Louis Cartier who joined the company in 1917, fell in love with the design. She oversaw the creation of the first panther ring in gold and black enamel and a three-dimensional emerald panther brooch created for the Duchess of Windsor in 1948.
